While my sister sleeps by Barbara Delinsky

I stumbled upon this book in the airport while waiting for my plane. The title attracted me and, when I read the tagline, I grabbed it and took it to the cashier.

“How do you decide when a life is over?”

Coma. Life Support. Organ Donation. You can read all about it on the net but you will never know how it does really feel like until you live it.

Barbara Delinsky’s book is about a world-class runner at the top of her carrier when her heart inexplicably fails her during practice and goes into a coma. Later on, medical tests prove that she is only living on life support and that the minute the machines are turned off, her heart would stop to beat. Her family, devastated, is left with the terrible decision and as the hours pass, this horrible situation will alternately bring them close together and set them apart.

What I loved about this book is how the writer takes us on this journey with the family – a mother, a father, a sister and a brother – showing how emotions affect the decisions we make, and how “letting go can be the hardest thing to do and the greatest expression of love all at the same time”.

The start might be a bit slow and you get the feeling that it is going to be predictable, but the revelation of massive family secrets, some story twists and minor background stories add depths to the story line, keeping you hooked to get to the conclusion. The book ends high on emotions, putting out some beautiful thoughts.

“Let go what might have been. Accept what is.”

PS. An indication on the book says that fans of “My Sister’s Keeper” by Jodi Picoult will love this. I personally watched “My Sister’s Keeper” as a movie and there are some similarities between the two stories.
